A collector in South Africa named Theo van der Merwe has asked me a number of questions regarding how to start collecting diecast model cars. I thought that my response to him would be of interest to others.

I thought it might be useful to make a list of the catalog number range(s)
used by the manufacturers.

As a guide, I have made general comments about the most commonly found model manufacturers. Please keep in mind that there are exceptions to many of the manufacturers usual production quality.

I can understand the reasoning but I don't like the execution. I see three
problems with the bands.

The industry is changing (for the better I am happy to report) and so I have changed my rating system to reflect recent developments.

- Wish List

I collect models as a surrogate for collecting the real thing. Owning even
one real clasic car requires a large committment of time and money. It is possible, however, to own models of more cars than even a wealthy collector could amass. I have made a quick list of some cars I'd like to see turned into models.
